A tanulmány fő kérdése, hogy egy kritikai szöveg összehasonlító kulturális elemzése képes-e jobban megérteni, hogy a Nyugat szerkesztője, Fenyő Miksa miért választotta az impresszionista kritika megközelítésmódját a modern irodalom magyarországi népszerűsítésére, a hagyományosabb esztétikai megközeltésekkel szemben.
