A mű töredékét Holl Béla ismertette, és az erdélyi úrvacsora-vita írott emlékeinek összefüggései alapján megállapította, hogy az nem sokkal Melanchthonnak 1560 április 19-én történt halála után, de legkésőbb 1561 elején jelenhetett meg. – E levélgyűjteményt a reformátusok saját felfogásuk igazolására adták ki szemben az erdélyi szász evangélikusokkal, akik 1556-ban az általuk vallott lutheri úrvacsoratanítás igazolására Melanchthonnak egy korai munkáját újra kinyomtatták (RMNy 133).
